strawberry shortpup

As much as I would love planting all sorts of annuals for their cheerful blooms on our deck, I know by the middle of summer both they and I will have lost interest in the whole concept of being outside in the dreadful, buggy heat. So most of the plants on our deck are now perennial survivors, hearty plants that persevere despite neglect, periods of natural and (wo)man made drought, and blazing heat.

Strawberries, believe it or not, are one of those mysteriously hearty plants. Sending out runners, they renew themselves each year, finding new places to grow in the very limited pot space of our deck. Generation after generation of berry plants have surivived through the years, bearing fruit for all the creatures that happen upon them in the springtime. Squirrels, birds, and, of course, dachshunds.

Kep developed the knack early on, of knowing when to snitch a strawberry at the height of ripeness, a skill he held on to even in his elder years, blind and hobbling around with nose crooked up in the air, sniffing for the strawberries he knew would be there, somewhere. And yes, he always managed to find them.

I am comforted in knowing that Kep's tradition now lives on through tiny chumley, who finally discovered on Sunday the sweet temptations of what I am sure he now calls his own garden of deck delights. First, it was all u can eat grass, and now, delicious strawberries. What more can a little kielbasa ask for, other than a kibble tree.

Minnie spent part of the year -- summmer and between winter holidays -- with her grandparents in West Virignia. They have always had a good-sized garden, as well as a few apple trees. It was a dangerous day when she figured out the garden was self-serve. (She and the deer had long been fighting over the apples.)

None of our critters will TOUCH fruit, with the possible exception of blueberries. They have no interest. One mini-Australian Shepherd friend would pretty much kill for bananas, and I've never seen a dog that would eat bananas before. It takes all kinds...

Daisy loves strawberries fresh off the vine. She always gets them as soon as they turn red. She seems to have miss the memo that dachshunds don't eat salads as she will eat any veggie or fruit with the exception of onions. She would love to come share your garden of deck delights!

We too have an lovely blue strawberry pot bursting with berries. Then I began to notice that there were bites taken out of several fruits. At first I thought that the birds were the culprits, as they are with the raspberries and blackberries, but then I saw Oskar trot up to the pot and begin grazing!
Oh, yes, self serve indeed!

Thanks for the information, Ladies! I had considered putting a garden in this year, I think I will stick to flowers- Annie doesn't eat those!

I have to say I'm sure it wasn't intended but just picturing Kep in his old age seeking out the strawberry brought tears to my eyes. Nothing is better than .. the little things in life. So sweet that Baxter is a berry loving baby too. :) XoXo

Hee - I'm not sure what image in my head I love more, doxies helping themselves at the all u can eat garden buffet bar, or the thought of one actually snubbing the whole thing! Just goes to show you how cute they are, no matter what they do!

Another veggie related story... The last year the boys were with us, Kep was still hobbledy mobile, and I had decided to plant cherry tomatoes in one of our raised beds rather than the deck, pretty far from the deck as far as a little blind and lame dog was concerned. Or so I thought. It took maybe 5-10 minutes, but with nose guiding his way, Kep finally did make his way over, and happily snitched a tomato, just like in the old days.

Baxter hasn't quite figured out tomatoes. I just gave him a cherry tomato today and he chawed on it, spat it out a few times like a marble, then finally pretty much swallowed it, trusting my advice but not totally convinced that this was a true delicacy. One of the joys of being an only dog, the luxury of being able to take your time investigating whether or something is truly eat-worthy.

Happy Wednesday!!

Happy Wednesday!
Here, the strawberries don't grow...
So, my grandma has to buy them on the store twice a week because we all love them!
Enjoy yours, Baxter!
Kisses and hugs
