snow day

Tiny chumley shivered as he glumly stood outside in the area we cleared for him out back. A typical sight for a snow day, this little dog, trembling so hard that he looked like a bobble head doll all abobble.

Like his brothers before him, Baxter has perfected the art of looking pitiful, of tugging at heart strings in hopes of being taken back inside before he has done his duties. Oh pleeeeze, he shivered in apparent morse code, can't we skip it and go back inside?

Baxter's pleas would have almost worked had he not spied a squirrel. Suddenly, his microcosmic corner of the world got five times warmer. Little Kielbasa darted off, barking and chasing his enemy from tree to tree, frolicking about like a dolphin bounding in and out of the water. We all enjoyed the snow for a few minutes, til the numbness in our noses and paws, and wetness of our clothes, told us that it really was time to go back inside for some rawhide and hot buttered popcorn, and lazing about for the rest of the day.

Ahh snow days at home. Winter's gift for putting up with chapped lips, drafty windows, and scratchy sweaters.

Often in the winter, Molly will insist on going out with "the big dogs." Then she'll pitifully paw at my pantsleg - of course, just when we're far enough from the house that it makes no sense to go back and put her inside. I'll pick her up as she shivers, warming little paws with my bare hands - sometimes opening my coat to hold her closer to me.

It is AMAZING how quickly she warms up when a squirrel or an enemy dog appears! I know she stays warmer when she's active and running around, but she does like to exert her power over me by having me carry her for a block or so.

Face it, we are merely minions put on Earth to facilitate their daily escapades. It's best we know our place and accept it.

You guys cope with real winter, while we only mess with occasional freezes and a few rainstorms. Even so, the doxie aversion to cold and wet comes through...except for Rosie. Her mom is a longhair and her breeder tells me they love water. Guess that explains why Rosie was chest deep in muddy water, floating around the backyard during our big rain last week.

Loved these pictures of Baxter! Super hat and that hind end winding behind the tree says it all...squirrel!

Looking very dashing in your little hat. Flash hates the cold, the wet and the muddy. He looks up at you with these eyes that are simultaneously pitiful and accusing while holding up a little paw and flicking off the wetness with disdain. Alven doesn't mind the cold too much, but I mind the wet for him because that long hair of his just soaks it up making him look like a raggedy mop that will then spread the love all over the house.

Molly is one smart cookie! Baxter's dad had to carry Padua once, all throughout our 1-2 mile park walk. No bluffin there, though. In retrospect it was the start of his arthritis.

I didn't realize longhairs like water! I was tempted to put Baxter in the giant bathtub to see if he would swim the other day but thought better of it when he looked so happy just sleeping by george.

Baxter's cap is something else, isn't it? Unfortunately I got it at Target a couple of years ago..on clearance! If anyone's interested and I'd be happy to try and make one. Just bear with me because I don't know what fabrics are out there that would work (you know, me n my silk n wool n cottons. I do have plaid flannels, but I would need to find the faux inside, and the little chin strap thingy. Just go through the alchemy process on Etsy (which isn't a firm commitment, til we make it so, if that makes any sense.) Or if you don't have an Etsy ID, just email me at kalyxcraftopia@gmail.com.

Okay, hmm, front view...Here is a post from Baxter's first snow experience. They don't quite capture the total essence - I'll see if I can dig up the others or snap a few new ones soon. :)

Snow, I hate snow! I don't get to chase birds or squirrels so I don't have any reason to warm up while I'm out there. Maybe I will come and stay at your place during the winter, what do you say?
