doot doot doot: B is for Brooches..and some necklaces too :)

hey friends, with any luck by the time u are reading this, me, duk duk, chocobot, lulu the tiger, and lil pink puppy will all be on the orion blasting off for a day trip to mars, so mom had to write today's blog post. i sure hope mars has poopie snakes, or at least they will by the time i leave  :)

There are stories to be told in vintage goods and the things that others often donate, throw away, or take for granted.  Sometimes the stories are obvious, yet most of the time, with only the signs of age and perhaps the remnant of a price tag or hand written inscription or other such cryptic clues to guide us, the stories are often left up to us to recreate, to imagine and reimagine as we see fit.  It's these sort of existential footprints that I now realize draw me to vintage goods and handmade items like a mischievous little weenie dog to kitty poop.  There is beauty in everything, but especially in things that make me think, remember, and reconnect.

I remember the the desire to fill my insatiable pre-kindergarten appetite of mental stimulation as being the primary reason I would wander as a small child into my dad's den at the first house we lived in.  The den, and the house,  I am sure are much smaller than I remember it, much like the greenish gray encyclopedia I thought was the largest, heaviest thing on the planet.  It was good for standing on to reach high places, good for pressing things, and good for tripping over it if I or my brother had so carelessly forgotten to put it away, as we so often did with everything.  Dad's den was filled with books on topics I could have cared less about as four year old, but I remember looking at them, the rows of mad men era paperbacks and hardcover technical books, the blue Webster's dictionary that we would in later years have to use when we made the mistake of asking what a word meant, and the Charlie Brown Peanuts books with super cute old school Snoopy that I would read over and over again after we moved to our second house. From the eyes of a four year old given the restriction to not touch anything, Dad's books were awesome.

Dad's books were never as neatly arranged again after the first move.  Many of the books I think stayed in moving boxes, pulled out only if they were absolutely needed, or otherwise left to languish in the creepy part of the basement where nobody wanted to go except for mom, who probably didn't really want to go either but was the only one brave enough to deal with the unfortunately placed washer and dryer and the random scary unwelcome live squirrel.  It was probably there at our second house that my family perfected the easier-to-buy-it-again-than-look-for-it habit that serves them still to this cluttered day.

We moved again for a second time with even more books in boxes, including my own growing collection of dyn-o-nite dynamite magazines and other scholastic book club purchases.  As empty nesters, Mom and Dad moved again, with even more books in boxes. In their current house, they have books overflowing not only in boxes but on every shelf and pseudo shelf imaginable.  When my dad fell gravely ill a couple years ago, the flickering prospect of him needing clear paths and a healthier breathing environment gave me something to ruthlessly do while we hoped and waited for better news.

Dad's doing pretty well for a fella his age now, thanks, and yes, books and I have a history.  A connection that runs deeper than I am old.  Which is why I think I find such beauty in books, regardless of their subject matter, and why I felt inspired to make with them.  They speak more than just the words on their page.  They speak of times gone by, representing not only thoughts,  but, by how they are designed and made, the craft, conscience and intentions of an era.  They are grounding and inspiring, comforting and sometimes disturbing, funny and heartwarming.  They do more than any precious gemstone could ever do.

The weather and our life lately hasn't exactly been conducive to helping tiny chumley finish his Christmas ornaments by today as we had hoped, but luckily my work with books and metal have been brewing for, as tiny chumley would put it, for forever now.  Which roughly translates to this past summer, when I realized I could give new purpose to the lovely thrift store books and kitchen countertop sample chips that nobody wanted anymore, and create new brooches with equally interesting backs, allowing meaningful connections for others.  The same others who also coincidentally love dachshunds of course, who maybe like to show their love like I do, in a fresh, modern, retooled vintage sort of way. A way like no other.

Today's scheduled doot doot doot that will activate in the etsy shop at 10:00PM EST tonight features the first three of these brooches as pretty updates on the cameo silhouette style, and three etched and enameled necklaces that really seemed go well without being all matchy matchy.  They're all labors of love, and hopefully they can share that love with with someone special this Christmas. :)

happy hallo-scary-ween :)

hee hee, thanks, chocobot, for taking care of yours and lulu the tiger's and lil pink puppy's halloween costumes. me and duk duk were so busy making ours, we did not have any time at all to work on stuff for the three of you. the toyfriend club scar on your cheek is a nice touch, by the way.

and, it was pure genius to put lulu the tiger and lil pink puppy in one costume.  now we have room for even more candy in our wagon!

okay, duk duk since u are already dressed, u wait here with chocobot and lulu the tiger and lil pink puppy while i get into my #topsecretSCARY costume, okay?

(zip snap shuffle shuffle zip snap swoosh zip)

you know, duk duk, i really like how everything turned out, but i sure wish mom would have let us make the teeth sharper and more scary spaced. i mean, how scary could that be, right? we have been scaring our friends all week with the pictures we posted on instagram and facebook and twitter.

(snap snap shimmy snap zip snap)

but, at least if nobuddy recognizes who we really are, then they can at least they think they know who we are, even though they would be really wrong.

(bump clatter clatter)

whoops. uh oh, was that my mask?

..boy it better be okay. without my mask, i'm just a long dog in a nicely fitted, super plushie hoodied onesie with white fur on my...

...chest.
whoa - did u guys just hear that?? i think i heard cassie.

no, false alarm. it was just the wind blowing a bunch of leaves.

okay, let me just get my mask on, and we finally can start trick or treating!!

oh not again. yes mom?

pictures? again?? but mom, me and duk duk already posed for our halloween card, and our super cool wall poster, and even for next year's calendar. and we promised that we would try to put them in the shop for you by this Monday and send out a doot doot dooty doot and everything.  well for the poster and the calendars anyway because we sold out of the cards for now. so our friends can see us in our full glory there,  and besides they will see us live any minute now when we knock on their door for tricks and treats.

so, like, do we have to?

okay, make a hole everybuddy. we need to make this quick so everybuddy keep their eyes open, mouths closed, and save the funny faces for after we bring back our candy haul.

phew, the inside of this mask smells like desperation and rancid gummy worms! duk duk - did you do this??

hee hee, why thank you my friend. it most certainly will help me get into character.  which i am guessing hardly anybuddy will guess even with u standing next to me and u are like the main character. oh, okay mom's ready, so on the count of three everybuddy..one..two..three...

trick or treeeeat! :)

(hee hee, ps if  did not get one because we sold out, here is a peek at our halloween card.  and do not worry if u missed out, it will be back in the shop again :) )

ready..set..

dear diary,
hooray! today me, duk duk, chocobot, lulu the tiger, and lil pink puppy all have special permission to stay home from school because guess what - we are going to help mom load a fresh new litter of teeny tiny doxie treasure boxes to etsy! and this time, not only is it a double litter of sixteen boxes total, but some are nakey nakey, and some wear bowties,  and some wear flowers,  and some are even playing with a supercool ballie this time!  yup, i know, it is very exciting, isn't it? i cannot wait to help them find new forever homes!

anyhoo, me and duk duk and chocobot and lulu the tiger and lil pink puppy have not yet decided on how we post the listings but if i have my way, we will be posting eight as we finish them during the day and then save the last eight for posting all at once at 8pm EST. or something like that.  it really depends on how much gumption we have, and we will try to sound the doot doot dooty doots via our instagram and facebook and twitter as best we can.

well diary, i best get on with my morning paw stretches because already i can tell i have a lot of typing ahead of me.  i hope u have a wondeful day!!

toodley-doo!
b. :)

PS - the boxes all usually show up in a special section of my shop but I cannot provide you the link yet because nothing is in the section yet!  so here is a link my shop just so u have it :)  ---> https://www.etsy.com/shop/kalyxcraftopia

my new friend hank :)

dear diary,
today i finally got to meet lulu's mom's new puppy and my new doxie puppy friend, hank! hank is now twelve weeks old and weighs five pounds and needless to say he is a real squeebert and neither of us could stay still long enough for pictures, so i decided to show you some videos from our first brunchmas playdate, which i figured u might want to see again and again and again so i posted them as viney videos.  all in all we had a lot of fun and the little misses came over and held him and everything! next time we visit together i think i will ask mom if she will make me a shark proof body suit because, well, let's just say that puppy teeth? well they are a whole lot sharper than u would think they are. especially when they are latched on to u like a crab on a finger, or in my case, a puppy on your neck meat.

anyhoo shark suit or not, i sure hope me and hank can get together and play again soon.  i have not yet seen his poopie snakes although mom says they are little peanuts, which would be a nice addition to our collection.

happy labor day monday and toodleydoo!

etsy fresh: some super cool new cards

Hello my friends, it's me, Baxter, your roving rover reporter.  Today I'm going to tell you about one the new cards I just put in my mom's etsy shop, because, well, mom said I cannot tell you about me and duk duk and chocobot and lulu the tiger and lil pink puppy's friday night stinkapolooza until after the stink is gone from the family room carpet.  Which might be a while, because it was that kind of super stink. And I can only tell you about one card because that is all I have time for.  On account of the stink abatement protocols, which went into effect at 19:00 hours yesterday night.  Because of stinkapalooza.

Anyhoo, this is my super cool new congratulations card, which has a very special surprise in it.  I will not spoil it here but if you clicky clicky here you can see the listing and see for yourself what's inside.  Needless to say, this would be a super card for, you know, times when u want to help someone celebrate an achievement, like, graduating from school, or saving up enough gummy worms to buy a new pedal car, or maybe they asked a special girl to stand over there and she said yes. Or maybe they got accepted into the secret stink society, or, they finally wrote their report on walruses! Or, maybe your friend got a promotion at work, or maybe they won the guess whose foofie super nationals, or well, u know, stuff.  Like how maybe me and duk duk and lulu the tiger and lil pink puppy finally got the stink our of our family room carpet.  Which will be an incredible accomplishment indeed.

My name is Baxter your roving rover reporter, wishing you the superest of Saturdays!

ps - if you would like to see the other new cards in my shop, u can click here on any of the following linky links: anniversary card, unicorn appreciation day friendship card, and my hello friend postcard (which is not new but never before really offered for sale because I have been including them with orders, but some friends have been asking for me to offer it so they could buy more and so there u have it! ) .  okay, time to get back to stink abatement duties.  toodleydoo! :)

counting cookies

...three,  four, seven, five, eleventy-two, ninety-zero point oh six, quadruple deuce astro eight, minus two, powerball twelvety nine, twenty-four!

phew, that was a lot of work but with dad's help mixing and our teamwork rolling and cutting, we made twenty-four peanut butter and banana snackie cookies, duk duk!

I am so glad our custom 3d printed snackie cutters came in the mail and we could use them now -  when we share our cookies with Santa and his reindeer tonight, there will be no question about who has been good this year and deserves all the presents in this neighborhood!

what's that duk duk? oh yes I agree to make the cookies easier to cut, when we make the next batch with your name on it we should leave out the big chunks of oatmeal too. just like how it was a really good idea to leave out the parsley from that whole foods biscuit recipe we used because who on earth would want less stinky breath? I mean, if anything, we should be putting monkey chow and fishy bits in them! I bet Santa and his reindeer would really like that - not only would their breath stink but the sleigh would be super nitro monkey chow gas powered! in fact, if Santa himself ate enough of our cookies, he could power the whole sleigh all by himself, and Rudolph and all the other reindeer could stay here and play with us.  but by my calculations, hmmmm, hmmm...he would need...fourquadred, take the threeve and carry the eleventy..he would need five batches of monkey chow cookies. which means not only should your cookies and chocobot's cookies and lulu the tiger's cookies and lil pink puppy's cookies be made with monkey chow and fishy bits, but mine too!  hmmm..hmmm..I guess that means we should really start over but we really should not waste a perfectly good but less gassy batch of cookies..

hee hee, mom, can u please ask dad to start mixing another batch while we start eating this one? :) :)

antici..

gee duk duk, now that we are home from school,  it sure stinks that we have to wait until it is dark before we can go trick or treating.

i mean, who even made up that rule? if u n me were in charge of trick or treating, u can bet it would start first thing in the morning and last all day. maybe two days even, and we would get so many gummy worms that  swedish fish would jump right into our treat wagon without even trying.

what's that duk duk? yeah, it is too bad chocobot n lulu the tiger n lil pink puppy all drew the short straws and have to stay home and help mom n dad pass out candy. but at least me and u can go out and we can collect enough candy for all of us!

(sigh)  lemme get up and see what time it is now. what? three o seventy clock?  sheesh that's like a whole nother four nine and gazillion seconds to go...

mooooom -  r u sure we cannot go trick or treating yet??

(hee hee, Happy Halloween my friends - may be poop be with u!! ) :)

dapper doxie duds: pretty in pink and orange

hee hee okay, lulu the tiger,  go tell mom i am going take the curlers out of my hair now and then we can start taking pictures of gingi's dud, okay?

and remember, if u see duk duk and he asks u where i am, tell him i am still at pupscouts and will meet him by the creek at eleventy oh five sixxy seven eight past twelven.

what?? u know, when the big hand is on the three and the little hand is on the ten.

no, it does not matter where the skinny long hand is. that one just keeps going for some reason and never stops. unless u have to change the batteries.  hey, can u just get mom already? pretty ain't gonna last all day here.

hee hee, poor gunther.  i bet his sister gingi stinks like all girls do.  and by stink i mean the kind that makes u want them to stand over there. like, yucky purple flower stink, not super awesome poopie stink.  only, i guess gunther's lucky at least that gingi is his sister, otherwise goodness knows how cootied up he would get. i mean, it's not like he could get her to stand over there for say a family portrait or something.  i mean, she is family n all. and families should stick together, cooties and stink n all, especially when they are wearing such wonderful duds as....oh, hello mom, i was just thinking to myself what a wonderful dud u made for gingi!  well, shall we begin? this should be pretty quick - i think i have my poses all worked out!

just give me one second to think of what i am going to say...

okey dokey let's go!

Why hello my friends, it's me, Baxter, your roving rover reporter, reporting to you today on the super pretty dud my mom just finished for my friend and Gunther's sister, Gingi!  Gingi wanted something pink and orange and super pretty with a removable skirt and everything, so I thought I would take you through some of the pretty detail work on this dud, because, well the pretty pink and orange damask fabric you can already see, right?

Here on my back u will see a lovely peter pan collar, slimming seam lines, and just a hint of orange picot edged ribbon peeking out from the pretty pink button detailed spine for texture and richness.

And moving on to the right side of my back, here is a pretty flower my mom made from hand dyed silk satin, freshwater pearls, and iridescent glass seed beads.  Can you guess the secret that this flower is hiding?

Well my friends, if you guessed that the flower is removable, then you guessed right! I saw mom do a lot of hand stitching to make sure everything still conformed the way it should and I think it turned out nicely, dontchoo?

And here are the many layers of swishy pink and orange tulle underneath Gingi's removable skirt.  I like the way it peeks out and says, "Hey, I'm tulle and I'm pink and orange and I'm here to make things poufy!".  I also think that tulle being kind of netty n all, that it might help contain any cooties Gingi might have. Oh, sorry mom, I mean, sorry Gingi.  If u stink I am sure it is not all that bad and if you have cooties I am sure u cannot help it on account of being a girl and all.  And no matter what I know you will still look pretty in this dress because looky....

even I look good in it and I'm a stinky boy!

(Hee hee, don't worry Gingi, I will de-boy stink it for you before my mom sends it off).  Well okey dokey that is my report for today and I hope you enjoyed it very much. And I hope Gingi really really likes her happy new dud!! This is Baxter your roving rover reporter wishing you the super duper Sunday!! :)

dapper doxie duds: four poops and a wedding

chugga chugga chugga chugga! woo wooo!
skreeeeeee - stop the train!! looky duk duk, mom finished frank's dud!!

it's got a happening bowtie and everything because frank is going to be the best dog at his mom's wedding.

and it's got double double welted pockets with secret snap closures to keep his mom and dad's wedding bands safe while he walks down the aisle!

gee, it's too bad i cannot help mom model it today on accout of us turning ourselves into tiny plastic toys so we could skip school. but even if i could, it is so small that i would only be able to wear it on my head. but maybe if we are lucky frank's mom will send us a picture of him wearing it on their big day, right duk duk?  oooh, i know - even though i cannot help her in the way i normally do, maybe we can help package it up for her! let's do that,  and then go outside to play before it is time to pick up chocobot and lulu the tiger and lil pink puppy.  now that we are small, i bet our poopie snakes will look ginormous!

(to be continued... :) )

Frank's Best Dog Ring Bearer Dud: Burnt orange & blue plaid woolen suiting, with secret snap closure double double welted ring pockets and retro removable bowtie. :)
