happy hound roundup: daisy & ammo

Hey! It's me, Baxter, your roving rover reporter, reporting to you today from the comfort of my kitty perch. Thing is, I have a bit of a problem here as my big kong toy is stuck between my perch and my window, and all I want to do is bark at it, even though mom says I could easily go under my perch to get it. Boy, she's totally missin the point, right? Anyhoo, seein's how I'm gonna be busy all day barkin and I can't go out to find something to report about, I thought I'd report about when the news comes to me. Like, how my mom n me sometimes get all sorts of swell pictures from the happy hounds who now have their very own dapper doxie duds.

U remember Daisy the biker doxie? Here she is, lovin life with her mom on the back of their motorcycle! How cool is that? Daisy looks much better her duds than I did, though I guess there's something to be said about wearin them the right way!

And then there's Ammo! Check him out - his mom customized his helmet and made his pedestal and everything! What a wonderdog! I totally want a hoop and I wanna see his show.

So, that's my report for today. Short n sweet cuz, cuz, well I gotta get back to barkin! Thanks Ammo n Daisy for sharing the pictures and this is Baxter your roving rover reporter, wishing you a happy new week! :)

dapper doxie duds: biker girl daisy

Meet daring Daisy,a long haired lovely who likes to let loose on her mom and dad's motorcycle. Yep, that's right, motorcycle! Daisy's mom was interested in getting a dapper doxie dud for her little girl and wanted to know how a dud might do for their easy riding. My answer? Let's find out!

So here it is, a working prototype going out in the mail today. And yeah, even though it is a prototype I couldn't just let it go all plain and boring, cuz you never know, first time could be a charm with our little long haired friend. No leather and fringe for this sweet girl, instead a fine wale corduroy dyed in deep pinks and reds with a touch of yellow, trimmed in tiny polka dots, black lace and cheery rose festooned ribbon to coordinate with her black helmet, carrying case, and cool pink gogles. Biker boys beware, this girl may ride bikes but she is all lady!

Vrooom vroom! I can't wait to hear how Daisy's duds work out for her!

of gardens, butterflies, and june pugs

Hey everybody, it's me, Baxter, your roving rover reporter, reporting to you today about June. What's that? Oh that's not me, silly, that's June. June pug. You know, the kind of dog that would drive me bonkers cuz of the way they sound when they breathe, all noisy n stuff? Luckily, June wasn't visiting me, she was visiting Molly, and even though Molly was pretty put out with having to share her mom's lap with June and her brother all weekend long, Molly still let June borrow one of her duds so they could be butterflies in her garden. My mom says they're both so cute it cracks her up.

I say, better them than me. Hey, speakin about time in the garden, this is me, not taking time to admire the hydrangeas that are blooming in my backyard. A roving rover reporter's got places to go, you know. Like, for chasin down stories on bunnies and squirrels n such. Which reminds me, I'm late for my daily backyard patrol!

This is Baxter your roving rover reporter wishing you a wonderful Thursday in the garden. Bye June Pug n Molly!

dapper doxie dud: annabelle's lady in red

dearest annabelle,
totally luv the dragon,
hope u love your dud!

- baxter, 3.4 years old, taking a break
from squirrel hunting to model annabelle's new dapper doxie duds.

Meet lovely Annabelle, a self described sweet tomboy of black and tan smooth doxie whose mom noticed that Annabelle's regular harness had rubbed a raw spot under one of her armpits (Annabelle, not her mom!). Ever the sweet girl, Annabelle didn't complain at all about the owie, but Annabelle's mom decided it was high time to treat her girl to a dapper doxie dud, one of the girly but not too frou frou kinds that would turn heads but not undermine Annabelle's tomboy status with her toyfriends. Somethin like Molly's patchwork dud, which Annabelle's mom really liked, but in reds with an ever so slight touch of blue. The result? This fun mix of velvets and cottons, and even a splash of hand dyed fabric, all bound in a cheery cherry red denim and lined in soft t-shirt cotton, embellished with an oblong baroque freshwater pearl. A little lady in red.

What's that? What happened to the Annabelle tag? Coco Chanel said it best, "Look in the mirror and take one thing off". Annabelle's dud was a little too frou frou with it, and so I left it off, drilling a hole hopefully large enough so that Annabelle can wear it on her collar, or perhaps her winter coat. Because I say, "No coat is complete without a tiny bit of bling."

booty wooty: mr dragon

dear diary,
wooty woot! wooty woot! just when i thought life couldn't get any better now that my pack is back together, mom let me sniff this. yep, a package, for little old me, from my new and lovely buddy annabelle! can u believe she sent me a blue dragon??? i thought those things were only in fairy tales but here he is, live and in person and according to annabelle's mom, indestructible. i am not sure what that means, but maybe mr.dragon can tell me while we're havin a little chew together, if ya know what i'm talkin about.

and wait, that's not all! annabelle even sent me post-its that look like me, which i like totally needed cuz i ran out last week when me n duk duk used my post-its to make space suits for our play. these doxie head ones are even cooler cuz if mom lets me, i can stick a few on for our school's next production when i have to be cerberus in our play, clash of the toyfriends. why they picked me for that role and not duk duk i'll never know, cuz he is a much better actor than me.

anyways, the last picture on the bottom right is me posin with all my booty and i just want to say that i love it all! thanks, annabelle and annabelle's mom, for being so kind and generous! my mom says she's gonna work on your dud this week!

so that's about - wait, what's that, diary? there's writing inside that card i chewed on?

oooh - a letter from annabelle! um......could me n mr dragon have a little privacy please?

toodles!

my lucky day

dear diary,
can u believe my luck? mom n dad took me to the flea market two days in a row! and this time, mom n dad bought that delicious stuff that i normally find on the ground. duk duk says it is called kettle corn but i like to call it floor corn. and boo hoo, they weren't very good about sharing it with me, but i still managed to pick up a few crumbs here and there. so yummy!

i also ran into my little buddies sasha and jasper at the market. boy has jasper grown - he used to be sooo tiny, and now he's just tiny, like his sister. and now there is someone new to their family, a baby human boy. i didn't get to sniff him on account of him being in this big stroller thingy but sasha and jasper say he's okay, especially when he's made poopy diapers, which they say smell terrific. i am not sure what that is all about, though it sounds like something i want to smell.

well, gotta run and play with my grandma and grandpa one last time before they leave, so talk to u again soon!

toodles!

to market, to market, sniffety-sniff

2010 marks the start of the third year of Baxter's life with us. So many things that were once novel for the little kielbasa are now part of the habits of his life. Tanning his tummy. Hanging with his homies at the dog park. Posing, for yet another picture in his very well documented life. In all these things and more, Baxter happily engages as part of the familiar life into which he has settled.

So it came as no surprise that Baxter immediately recognized where we were when we pulled into the parking lot yesterday. The flea market, or as tiny chumley apparently remembers it, the magical place with an abundant supply of food to find on the ground.

Tiny chumley jauntily made his way across the asphalt as we wandered from the parking lot to the market area, nose twitching with excitement while he held his tail upright, letting it bob back and forth in unison with his bouncy walk. So many things to smell, so many opportunities for tummy fortunes.

The closer we got to the market, the closer his nose moved to the ground, where it stayed for most of our time there, save for the occasional distraction at a higher level.

Top on Baxter's sniff list, two friendly doxies. Charley, a deep rich red handsome mini a year younger than Baxter who was also a rescue, and Abby, a long haired sweet red mini maybe a mix who was doxie shy, whose original owner never came to pick her up from the lady who was sitting her. And who now lives happily with two cats and her new mom.

Baxter also spied a fire engine in which he would have fit perfectly, had we not already gotten him last year's rusty treasure. A project still on the to do list, though both of us are happy admiring it where it currently sits, above one of my many fabric shelves with a vintage Baxter license plate leaning against it.

Of course, by the end of our visit it goes without saying that Baxter did make a few scores of his own while I made mine. Tiny bits of popcorn for my satisfied pup, who must surely have pigeon in his ancestry, whilst I made off with a few delights that I'll share in tomorrow's post.

All in all, fine way to spend a Sunday, I do declare.

sunday morning singalong: the doxie bunch song

hey everybody, it's me, baxter! i had a fine day yesterday and i even wrote a song about it. well, my mom helped me a lot, cuz, well, i never heard of the brady bunch theme song before. but now i do and and hope you'll sing along with me. ready? let's go...

here's a story,
of little doxie,
who was hanging with his homies in the park.
he was brave then,
a barky doggie,
the loudest one of all.

here's a story,
of that same doxie,
who was barking at the big dogs by the fence.
they weren't doxies,
so he didn't like them,
or so that's what he thought.

til the same day when his mom took him to the other side,
and there was nowhere that this doxie could hide,
that this dog, must somehow get along
with all the other doggies in the doggie park.
oh i'm so proud,
yes i'm so proud,
baxter managed not to turn into somebody's lunch!

squeaky love

mom says i have to practice my writing which is like a total downer cuz it's saturday, right? plus i wrote a limerick earlier in the week and that was like a whole new thing for me to learn. But she says if i do it then we can go to doxie playgroup after we pick up dad from the airport, so i guess it all works out.

anyway, today i thought i would write about my uncle smidge. not that i have a lot to say about him cuz i haven't met him yet, but sometimes he sends me things and how can u not love that? this is a picture of him from like three years ago when mom and dad visited his house. he's a mini who used to be kinda chubby but dad says he's not so sausagey now since the vet put him on a diet a while back when smidge's mom and dad left him there while they were on vacation. a diet! holy cow, can u imagine that?? boy that would stink, bein away from mom and dad AND not gettin nearly enough chow. i would totally wanna break out of that joint if i knew how to do that sort of thing. maybe if mom and dad ever board me, i can bring duk duk cuz together i am sure we can come up with a plan if we need to. but let's hope that doesn't have to happen, ever. boarding, i mean. seriously. mom and dad r u reading this?

now, i guess the real reason why mom has me writing today is to talk about the package i got from uncle smidge yesterday. o happy day, he sent me a new toy! i named it squeaky, cuz, well it squeaks. at least for now. i haven't quite killed it yet cuz i am waiting til dad comes home. i figure he might want to chew on it, too, and it's a lot funner to do that when it squeaks. in fact, maybe i should bring it with me to the airport so he can work on it while we drive to playgroup. i am sure after a long trip he would enjoy chewing on my new toy. i know i would.

so that's my report. i hope it is long enough. oh, and thank you uncle smidge for the really swell gift!

tummy love: precious annie

Today, a start on harnesses for the precious Annie, a shorthaired dapple that's sweet as pie and cute as a button. I sent Annie and her mom a fit prototype a couple weeks ago and now it's back, pinned and ready to serve as the pattern for Annie's very own dapper doxie duds.

Little kielbasa may not appreciate how exciting this is for me, but he's happy just the same, thanks to the milkbones Annie's mom also included in the package. Pure tummy love. Thanks Annie and Annie's mom!!

bands of my brothers

It can be a lofty thing for a little doggie, being fourth in a line of beloved doxies. So much history, so many expectations based on what his predecessors did and did not do before him. But I think tiny chumley bears the burden of his forebrothers well, readily carving out his own path to our hearts in ways we could have never imagined. Haikus, silly riddles, and goofy glances. Dancing, georging, and hunting. Even cross dressing, and now dressing up in the bands of his brothers, all because he can, because he will. Because he is Baxter, our little boy wonder.

Three more days, weather permitting, and our pack will be whole again. hooray!

my buddy pretzel

dear diary,
guess what - i ran into one of my twinsie buddies, pretzel! pretzel is pretty cool, he's about my age and has this scar on his snout from when he got into something and had to get stitches. stitches! i am really envious but then again at least i have a tattoo, so i guess we are even when it comes 2 impressin da ladies. but pretzel also goes running with his mom, can u believe it? i like 2 run short distances so i don't think i could keep up with him if i had 2. which is ok, cuz mom said she couldn't run very far either and i only want 2 keep up with her.

well, diary, i know mom is still gone but if i'm countin right, i only have 5 more days til she gets back. maybe me n dad can watch more cartoons so i can work on more riddles.

toodles!

my girl rizzo

dear diary,
guess what! u remember rizzo, right? my first girlfriend. well friend who was a girl. she was the first doggie i ever met on my first ever walkies with my new family. then for a while we used to run into each other pretty regularly, and we would play n play n play n get our leashes all tangled up cuz we ran around each other in circles. she's the rizzo i talk about in my dancing video. well as u might guess it's been forever and a day since i've seen her and last week i ran into her! i was so excited i could hardly stop smelling her. mmmm she smelled good, and she's not even a doxie!

sadly, i was so excited about smellin her that we never got to play. u think maybe next time i see her mom will let me ask her over to play with me in my backyard?

toodles,

happy hound harness roundup

It's always gratifying when I get pictures of happy hounds wearing the custom dapper doxie duds I've made for them. And a relief for the little kielbasa, who can finally prove to the world that he isn't a cross dresser, at least by choice.

Today, followups on two of the happy hound posse. First, a peek at Molly the fearless doxie. Molly's picture cracks me up, the way she's got that "I'd rather be climbing trees than modeling for some silly pictures" look on her face. Some days, tiny chumley knows just how she feels.

Miss Edith, the sweet doxie who recently needed and found a new forever home, had some help in opening her package when it arrived, courtesy of her hambone of a sister, Daisy the corgi. I'm not quite sure it was the help she was looking for, but with a rub-my-tummy look like that, who can resist? Hopefully the new harness and matching leash will serve Miss Edith well when she attends a wedding by the lake this summer.

Little kielbasa has been a trooper while my attentions have seemingly been diverted elsewhere lately on projects such as these. But yesterday night he must have finally had his fill, making his presence known by way of a classic doxie move, the head wedge, squeezing his smooshed face between my legs while I sat on the floor working on an office chair I had scored earlier that day.

All this work on stuff and nothing for me??, his eyes asked.

Ahh, fear not, tiny boyfriend, Valentine's day is just around the corner.

peep show: molly's dapper doxie duds

dear diary,
well can u believe i had to dress up again like a girl?? seriously, what is up wit dat? but to be honest with ya, so long as duk duk doesn't find out about it, i think i'm okay with the whole thing. i mean, the snacks aren't too shabby and look at all the friends i get to meet.

take my new friend, molly, a rubenesque red mini. now, i know what you're thinking and let me just say i don't think she looks like a sandwich either, but that's what my mom called her. i think she just looks pretty with all that white hair on her face n paws, and i bet you she'd be really soft to snuggle with, too. like a nice pillow. that is, if she'd let me. i'm not so sure cuz do u see those fangs on her? i wonder if she was just playing with one of her big dog brothers. sometimes the camera catches us at the most inopportune moment, know what I mean?

anyways, here is the first dapper doxie dud my mom made for her. molly's mom really liked the retro brown floral fabric from chloe's harness, and wouldn't ya know mom finally found some more and so she made this one for molly, only this time she bound the duds in fuschia hot pink hand dyed twill and skipped the yellow ruched ribbon in favor of a simple vintage button and glass bead embellishment. don't tell duk duk but i totally felt like marcia brady in this harness, and she was the popular one with all the boyfriends, right? molly is bound to turn some heads wearing this, i do declare, and yet she'll still be able to climb and dig into the log pile with her brothers.

now, for the second harness, molly's mom said that mom mom could do whatever, only they both agreed that maybe a bodacious side flower on the back wasn't molly's thing. partly cuz she's kinda rough n tumble tomboy and partly cuz of the whole sandwich thing. again, don't ask me what that means, though when i look at her recent pictures sometimes it seems like i am looking in the mirror and seeing the dog i was when i first was adopted, if ya know what i mean. so mom wanted to keep the lines simple (ie no ruffles or big ol flowers) yet still do something texturally interesting that would help break up her lines for a slimming effect. so here's molly's second dapper doxie dud, an arty serged patchwork creation using fabrics from mom's scrap bin, bound in a different hand dyed twill and embellished with a pink baroque freshwater pearl and brass tag. girly, but not frou frou girly. the kind of thing molly could wear to the opera or to the park.

well, that is all for now. i sure hope molly likes her new harnesses! mom says i should get some extra zzzs tonight because i need to help her prepare for another etsy post. how cool is that? maybe she'll even give me a sandwich.

toodles!

peep show: miss edith's dapper doxie duds

o purple lace harness,
why am i dressed in you?
i am not a girl.

- baxter, 3.1 years old, on being lucky enough to fit Miss Edith's dapper doxie dud.

There's something so very Christmas morning about finishing up a dapper doxie dud order. Aside from the wrapping and sending, there's excitement and anticipation, the kind that's hard to ignore when it's so easy to post and show to the world that I've been doing more than just feeding Jenna all day. I am on a roll, ladies and gentlemen, and only the winds of procrastination can keep me from forging on with doxie dud orders.

Yesterday, I finished up a dapper doxie dud for Miss Edith, the real recipient of the lacy harness that Baxter is modeling. This girl is a sweet, senior doxie who only recently found her forever home, and whose new mom wanted her to have something special. Only Miss Edith knows the secrets of her past, why and how it is she ended up needing a new home so late in life. Somehow, it seemed only appropriate that Miss Edith wear purple, that she be graced with the textures of hand dyed lace and silk, adorned with mother of pearl, and comforted by the warmth of a soft flannel lining. The package is on its way, sweet girl.

Tomorrow, a start on harnesses for Molly, and hopefully some late night Etsy postings.

my buddy tiny molly

Meet Baxter's new buddy, tiny molly, a doxie puppy that the kielbasa sniffed with great intensity while going on walkies around the lake yesterday. Words can't express the cuteness packed into molly's little body. A tiny stuffed toy. The wind up variety that you'd expect to hop about the room in circles once you turned her key a few times. But tiny molly was real, and only nine weeks old. And yesterday was her second day with her new family. Welcome to your new life, little girl.

day 6: family tree (digger, part three)

Yippee!!! Day 6 so mom is coming home today. But I digress. It's me, Baxter, your roving rover reporter reporting to you today from my walkies. But don't worry if you already went to the bathroom cuz I'm not a marker either. There will still be plenty for us to do. I brought along another one of my mom's stories for us to read.

"This is the Digger I met and have always known, the little brown dog with white face and paws and a baritone bark. A manly little dog, made even more so because he was, ahem, still very endowed.

Digger's life as a little senior dog was uncomplicated, just the way he liked it. When he would wander out back in his tiny fenced yard, he would walk the perimeter carefully, sniffing at Molly the Golden Retriever on one side, and, having confirmed that she was there, continue walking his beat in circles until he felt it was time to come inside, at which point he would let out a single chesty bark by the door. Digger must have liked orbiting. When dad would stretch out on the floor, Digger would orbit him just as he did his backyard, trundling about with his tail wagging happily.

Although Digger was very spry for his age, by the time his dad and I were engaged, Digger would often set his own bedtime and wander upstairs on his own to turn in for the night in his little bed.

There were other things, we would find out, that he probably did in bed.
Digger's cheeks would occasionally swell and we thought for sure he might have a dental problem and took him to the vet. But to our surprise, the vet didn't find signs of dental infection. He found kibble. Little food packs. Evidence, of Digger's inadvertent but serendipitous method of eating, the mechanics of which somehow trapped food in hamster-like fashion between his back teeth and inner cheek. Our first boy with his chipmunky jowls had become a hamster in his old age, squirreling away snacks to nibble at his leisure in the comfort of his own bed. "

Hey whazit mean to be endowed? Duk Duk said it is when somebody or an institution is given money for a specific purpose. Do you think whoever endowed him could endow me so I could buy some rawhide?

Anyway, this is Baxter your roving rover reporter reporting to you now from my home. Thanks for keeping me company while my mom was gone!!!
